According to genealogical records, the de FAU family have owned the "Sert de SINARD" (the name given to the undulation overlooking the hamlet of Les Marceaux in Avignonet) since the first quarter of the 17th century, and perhaps even before. Since those early days, the Chateau d'Avignonet estate has passed through the hands of many owners, including Claude de Nantes, who from 1719 was King's Councillor, Treasurer of France and Seigneur d'Avignonet.
